Rock the Boat - Week 2

The Essential Priority of a Disciple

You and I, on our own, are entirely incapable of living the Christian life.

How Do We Follow?

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Five Categories of Words in Matthew 11:28-30

  1. Words that expose
  2. Words that invite
  3. Words that describe
  4. Words that promise - Jeremiah 6:16 - Thus says the LORD: “Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
  5. Words that relieve

Discussion Questions

  1. Reflecting on Weariness: In what areas of your life do you feel weary or heavy-laden? How does this relate to trying to handle things on your own or relying on self-effort rather than trusting Jesus?
  2. The Invitation of Jesus: Jesus invites us to come to Him and find rest. How do you typically respond to feelings of weariness or stress? Do you turn to Jesus first, or do you look for other solutions?
  3. Jesus' Character: Jesus describes Himself as "gentle and humble in heart." How does His character influence your willingness to come to Him when you're struggling or feeling overwhelmed?
  4. The Yoke of Jesus: Jesus says His yoke is easy, and His burden is light. How do you experience His yoke in your own life? Are there areas where you are still carrying burdens alone that He invites you to surrender?
  5. Living "With" Jesus: The sermon challenges us to live "with" Jesus in every moment. What does it look like for you to live with Jesus throughout your daily life? What changes can you make this week to intentionally walk with Him in surrender?
