Sermon Notes
INTRO — The Hinge of Ephesians
Grace doesn't eliminate responsibility. Grace creates a new reason for responsibility.
If someone watched the way you live, would they see evidence of what you say you believe?
1. WALK WORTHY OF YOUR CALLING
2. PROTECT THE UNITY JESUS CREATED
Biblical community isn't finding people who never annoy you. It's learning to love imperfect people like Jesus has loved you.
Am I someone who strengthens unity or strains it?
3. USE WHAT JESUS GAVE YOU
Unity does not mean uniformity.
There are no unnecessary Christians in the body of Christ.
Consumer model:
- Pastors do ministry.
- People attend ministry.
Ephesians 4 model:
- Leaders equip.
- Believers minister.
- The body grows.
Where are you currently consuming what God intended you to contribute?
You don't have to do everything. But every believer should do something.
4. HELP SOMEBODY ELSE GROW
Maturity doesn't mean storms stop coming. It means every storm stops determining your direction.
Do you have anyone in your life who loves you enough to tell you the truth?
God doesn't build His Church through a few gifted people doing everything. He builds it through every believer faithfully doing their part.
3-Day Devotional: Walk Worthy
Day 1 — Live Like You Belong to Jesus
Read:
Ephesians 4:1
Paul tells believers to “walk in a manner worthy” of their calling. He isn't saying we have to be good enough for Jesus to love us. Jesus has already given us grace.
Instead, our lives should be a response to what Jesus has already done for us.
Think about it this way: We don't obey Jesus so that He will love us. We obey because He already loves us.
That changes the way we live. Our faith shouldn't only show up on Sunday. It should affect how we treat our family, how we work, how we speak, how we handle stress, and how we treat people who disagree with us.
Ask yourself:
Does the way I live on Monday show that I belong to Jesus?
Pray:
“Jesus, thank You for loving me and calling me. Help my life show what I believe. Help me follow You not because I'm trying to earn Your love, but because You have already given it to me. Amen.”
Live it out:
Choose one part of your life today—work, family, school, friendships, or social media—and ask, “What would it look like to live like Jesus here?”
Day 2 — Protect the Unity
Read:
Ephesians 4:2–3
Paul tells us to be humble, gentle, patient, and willing to put up with one another in love.
That sounds good until we remember that “one another” means actual people.
People who annoy us.
People who disagree with us.
People who make mistakes.
People who sometimes hurt us.
Jesus doesn't call us to find a church filled with perfect people. He calls us to love imperfect people because He has loved us.
Paul says we should be “eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit.” Notice that he doesn't say we have to create unity. Jesus has already created it. Our job is to protect it.
That means we should think carefully before we gossip, assume the worst, hold a grudge, or make every disagreement a battle.
Ask yourself:
Am I helping bring people together, or am I making relationships harder?
Pray:
“Jesus, give me humility, patience, and gentleness. Help me love people who are different from me. Show me if there is someone I need to forgive, encourage, or make peace with. Amen.”
Live it out:
Take one step toward someone today. Send a text. Make a phone call. Apologize. Forgive. Encourage them. Protect the unity.
Day 3 — Use What God Has Given You
Read:
Ephesians 4:7
,
4:12
,
4:16
Paul says that grace has been given to each one of us.
That means you matter in God's family.
You don't need a microphone, a title, or a church job for God to use you. You don't have to be the best speaker or know the Bible better than everyone else.
God has given you something that can help build up other people.
Maybe you're good at encouraging people. Maybe you know how to serve behind the scenes. Maybe you are a good listener. Maybe you have wisdom from your experiences. Maybe you can teach, lead, welcome, pray, give, or simply show up when someone needs help.
The goal isn't just to ask, “How can I grow?”
A better question is:
“Who can grow because I'm part of their life?”
The church becomes stronger when every person does their part.
Ask yourself:
What has God given me that I could use to help someone else?
Pray:
“Jesus, thank You for giving me gifts and opportunities to serve. Show me where I can make a difference. Help me stop waiting for someone else to do it and give me courage to use what You've given me. Use my life to help someone else grow closer to You. Amen.”
Live it out:
Choose one person you can encourage, serve, or invest in this week. Don't wait for the perfect opportunity. Start somewhere.
