None of those things were enough if God wasn't with them.

A good guide is better than a clear path.

God Guides His People

Exodus 13:17–22 (ESV)

1. God chose the route. (13:17-18)

God's guidance isn't measured by speed. It's measured by His wisdom.

2. God stayed visible (13:21)

3. God never removed His presence. (13:22)

God's Presence Is Better Than God's Gifts

Exodus 33:12–23 (ESV)

1) God's presence is our direction. (v.14)

2) God's presence is our distinction. (v.16).

3) God's presence transforms us.

The goal isn't simply getting to Canaan.

The goal is walking with God.

Small Group Discussion Questions

1. Moses said, "If your presence does not go with us, do not send us." (Exodus 33:15) Why do you think God's presence was more important to Moses than reaching the Promised Land? What does that teach us about following Jesus today?
2. God led Israel on the longer road because they weren't ready for the shorter one. Can you think of a time when God didn't answer your prayer the way you wanted? Looking back, how might God have been leading you with wisdom instead of speed?
3. What are some good things that can become more important to us than spending time with God? How can we keep His presence as our highest priority?
4. Exodus 33:16 says God's presence is what made Israel different from every other nation. If someone watched your life this week, what evidence would they see that you belong to Jesus?
5. This week, what is one practical step you can take to spend more time with God and become more aware of His presence every day?

Three-Day Devotional

Day 1 — Trust the Guide

Read: Exodus 13:17–22

Key Verse: "The Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud... and by night in a pillar of fire." (Exodus 13:21)

Sometimes we want God to show us the fastest way. But God is more interested in leading us the best way. He took Israel on a longer journey because He knew what they were ready for.

God sees what we cannot see. We can trust that His direction is always wiser than our own plans.

Think About It: Where have you been frustrated because God didn't answer as quickly as you hoped?

Challenge: Spend five minutes today thanking God for one time He protected or guided you in a way you didn't understand at first.

Prayer: Father, help me trust Your guidance, even when Your plan is different from mine. Thank You for always leading me with wisdom. Amen.

Day 2 — What Makes You Different?

Read: Exodus 33:12–17

Key Verse: "What else will distinguish me and your people... except your presence?" (Exodus 33:16)

Many things can make us stand out—our talents, jobs, hobbies, or success. But none of those are what make Christians different. The greatest difference is that God lives with us through His Holy Spirit. His presence changes how we think, speak, love, forgive, and serve others.

Think About It: Would the people around you say they see Jesus in the way you live?

Challenge: Choose one person today to encourage, forgive, or serve in a way that reflects God's presence in your life.

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being with me every day. Help others see You through the way I live. Amen.

Day 3 — Choose His Presence

Read: Exodus 33:18–23

Key Verse: "Show me your glory." (Exodus 33:18)

Moses had already seen miracles, but he wanted something even greater. He wanted more of God. It is easy to ask God for help, blessings, or answers. Those are good things to pray for. But our greatest desire should always be to know Him better. God's greatest gift is His presence.

Think About It: When you pray, do you spend more time asking God for things or simply enjoying time with Him?

Challenge: Set aside ten quiet minutes today. Read a few verses of Scripture, thank God for who He is, and sit quietly, asking Him to help you know Him more.

Prayer: Lord, help me want You more than Your gifts. Teach me to enjoy Your presence and to walk closely with You every day. Amen.
