Sermon Notes

John 14:1–7

The structure of the text naturally moves:
  • A troubled heart
  • A promised home
  • A prepared way
  • A present hope while we wait

I. Troubled Hearts Need More Than Empty Comfort

A. Jesus acknowledges real grief

B. The answer to troubled hearts is trust in Christ

Christian hope is not optimism. It is confidence rooted in the character and promises of Jesus.

II. Jesus Gives Hope Through the Promise of Heaven

  • “My Father’s house”
  • “Many rooms”
B. Jesus personally prepares a place

“I go to prepare a place for you.”

C. The greatest promise of heaven is Jesus Himself

III. Jesus Is the Only Way to Heaven

IV. Jesus Does Not Show the Way — He Is the Way

A. Jesus is THE way
B. Jesus is the truth
C. Jesus is the life
D. The exclusivity of Jesus is actually hope

1. We keep believing in the middle of pain

2.. We live as pilgrims, not permanent residents

Hebrews 13:14

3. We comfort others with the comfort we’ve received

2 Corinthians 1:3–4

4. We long for Christ more than merely relief

Small Group Questions

  1. Jesus told His disciples not to let their hearts stay troubled. What is something in your life right now that causes you fear or worry? How can trusting Jesus help you this week?

  2. Jesus said He is preparing a place for His followers in heaven. How does knowing heaven is real change the way we face hard times on earth?

  3. Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” Why do you think people try to find hope or peace in things other than Jesus?

  4. The sermon said Christians can grieve deeply but not hopelessly. What is the difference between sadness with hope and sadness without hope?

  5. Who is someone around you that may be hurting right now? What is one practical way you can encourage them with the hope of Christ this week?

Day 1 — Trusting Jesus with Troubled Hearts

Read: John 14:1

Devotional: Jesus spoke these words to disciples who were scared, confused, and hurting. He knew they were struggling, yet He did not shame them for feeling afraid. Instead, He called them to trust Him.

Many times we want God to remove every hard situation right away. But often Jesus first calls us to believe that He is still good, still present, and still in control.

Faith does not mean pretending life is easy. Faith means choosing to trust Jesus even when life feels uncertain.

Application: What is one thing causing your heart to feel troubled today? Pray honestly about it and ask Jesus to help you trust Him.

Prayer: Jesus, You know my fears and worries. Help me trust You instead of being controlled by fear. Remind me that You are with me even in hard seasons. Amen.

Day 2 — Heaven Is Our True Home

Read: John 14:2–3

Devotional: Jesus promised His followers that heaven is real and that He is preparing a place for them. This world is not our forever home. Pain, loss, sickness, and death will not last forever for those who belong to Christ.

The best part of heaven is not streets of gold or freedom from pain. The best part is being with Jesus forever.

When life feels heavy, remembering eternity gives us hope. Christians grieve, but we do not grieve without hope because Jesus has promised eternal life.

Application: How would your daily attitude change if you remembered more often that this world is temporary?

Prayer: Father, thank You for preparing an eternal home for Your people. Help me live with my eyes fixed on Jesus and the hope of heaven. Amen.

Day 3 — Jesus Is the Only Way

Read: John 14:6

Devotional: Jesus did not say He would simply show the way to God. He said He is the way. Salvation is not earned by being good enough, trying harder, or becoming more religious. Salvation comes only through Jesus Christ.

This truth is both challenging and comforting. It is challenging because it means we cannot save ourselves. But it is comforting because our hope does not depend on our performance. It depends on Jesus.

When we fail, struggle, or suffer, we can rest in knowing Christ is enough.

Application: Are there areas where you are trusting yourself more than Jesus? What would it look like to fully rely on Him?

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being the way, the truth, and the life. Help me trust fully in You and not in myself. Teach me to follow You each day. Amen.
