Open Handed - Week 5
“Open Handed Living”
Quick Navigation
Sermon Notes
Big Idea / Bottom Line:
Open handed living begins when we recognize that everything belongs to God and generosity becomes a response to His grace.
Psalm 24:1–2 — Our Foundation
Read Psalm 24:1–2
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it…”
We live open handed.
-
Giving is a response to grace — not begrudging obedience to a law.
-
Giving is an act of worship declaring Jesus as King — not a tax supporting a needy kingdom.
The New Testament Pattern of Generosity
1) Prayerful
Acts 13:2–3 and
Philippians 4:6,
15–16
- New Testament generosity begins in prayer and dependence on God.
2) Consistent
1 Corinthians 16:1–2 and
Acts 2:45
- Generosity becomes a rhythm, not just a spontaneous moment.
3) Joyful
2 Corinthians 9:7 and
Acts 20:35
- God desires willing hearts, not pressured obedience.
4) Generous

Acts 4:32–35
- Generosity reflects the heart and character of Jesus.
5) Sacrificial
Mark 12:41–44,

Philippians 4:18
- Sacrificial giving trusts God even when it costs something.

- God loves a cheerful giver.
- Joyful generosity flows from remembering God’s grace toward us.

Next Step
What is one next step you feel God may be asking you to take this week?
Devotional 1 — “Everything Belongs to God”
Psalm 24:1–2 — Living as stewards, not owners
Read:
Psalm 24:1–2
“The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it…”
Reflect:
One of the biggest changes in the Christian life happens when we stop seeing ourselves as owners and start seeing ourselves as stewards.
Everything we have already belongs to God—our time, money, gifts, family, and future. That truth can feel scary at first, but it is actually freeing. We do not have to carry the pressure of being our own provider and protector. God is faithful.
Generosity starts with trust. When we open our hands, we are saying, “God, I believe You gave this to me, and I trust You to lead me with it.”
Open handed living is not about losing things. It is about learning to trust the One who owns it all.
Reflection Questions:
- What is hardest for you to surrender to God?
- Do you live more like an owner or a steward?
- How could trusting God change the way you handle money or possessions?
Prayer:
“God, thank You for being my Provider. Help me trust You with everything You have placed in my hands. Teach me to live open handed and full of faith. Amen.”
Devotional 2 — “Joyful Giving”
2 Corinthians 9:7 — Cheerful hearts
Read:
2 Corinthians 9:7
“God loves a cheerful giver.”
Reflect:
God is not after reluctant obedience. He wants willing hearts.
Sometimes people give because they feel pressure, guilt, or fear. But the New Testament points us toward joy. Why? Because generosity reminds us that God has already been generous to us.
We can give freely because we know God will continue to care for us. Joyful giving grows when we remember the gospel: Jesus gave everything for us first.
A cheerful giver is not someone who always has extra money. It is someone who trusts that God is enough.
Reflection Questions:
- What emotions usually come up when you think about giving?
- Have you ever experienced joy through generosity?
- How does remembering God’s grace change your perspective?
Prayer:
“Jesus, thank You for Your generosity toward me. Help my heart become joyful and willing. Teach me to trust You more than my fears. Amen.”
Devotional 3 — “Sacrificial Trust”
Mark 12:41–44 — Trusting God completely
Read:
Mark 12:41–44
Reflect:
The widow in this story gave only two small coins, but Jesus said she gave more than everyone else. Why? Because she trusted God completely.
Jesus measures generosity differently than we do. People often focus on the amount, but Jesus looks at surrender.
Sacrificial giving is not about showing off or being reckless. It is about trusting God enough to obey Him even when it costs something.
For many people, the next step is not a huge leap. It may simply be choosing consistency, taking a first step of generosity, or trusting God in one new area.
God is not trying to take from you. He is growing trust, freedom, and worship in you.
Reflection Questions:
- What might sacrificial trust look like in your life right now?
- Is there an area where you are holding tightly instead of trusting God?
- What is one practical next step you can take this week?
Prayer:
“Father, help me trust You more deeply. Open my hands and my heart. Teach me to live with faith instead of fear. Amen.”
