Resurgence Community - Week 3
The Squeeze
Acts 5:27–32
Corporate Courage in the Face of Opposition
I. The Physics of the Kingdom
The Momentum: When we follow Jesus (Notice, Engage, Act), we create spiritual momentum.
The Friction: Momentum always meets resistance.
The Big Idea: The Squeeze isn’t a sign that the mission is failing; it’s proof that you’ve finally become a threat to the darkness.
II. The Strategy of the Squeeze (vv. 27-28)
Saturation: Jerusalem was "filled" because the entire congregation took ownership of the message in the markets and homes.
Types of Pressure:
- Legitimacy: The "Who are you?" pressure.
- Reputation: The "You’re being difficult" pressure.
- Silence: The "Keep it private" pressure.
III. The Corporate "Must" (v. 29)
Divine Necessity: The word "Must" (dei) implies a conviction heavier than fear.
The Phalanx: Courage is a team sport. Ancient soldiers interlocked shields to handle the squeeze.
Circle Connection: We move from "Rows to Circles" so we don't have to face the squeeze as lone rangers.
IV. The Witness and the Proof (vv. 30-32)
The Partnership: We provide the words; the Spirit provides the power; the church provides the proof.
The "Receipts": Transformed lives and tangible missions.
Nicaragua: Our "Outdoor Kitchen" project with Pastor Javier is a permanent receipt of the Gospel’s power to change a community.
V. The 7-Day Courage Challenge
Identify your Must.
Name the Squeeze.
Lean on the WE.
Small Group Questions
1. Saturation: The High Priest complained that the church "filled Jerusalem." If someone looked at your neighborhood or office, would they say it is being "filled" with the name of Jesus, or just "blending in"?
2. Identifying the Squeeze: Which of the three pressures (Legitimacy, Reputation, or Silence) do you feel most often in your daily life?
3. The "Must": Peter said, "We must obey." What is a non-negotiable conviction God has given you that helps you stand firm when things get uncomfortable?
4. The Phalanx: Have you ever tried to be a "Lone Ranger" Christian? What happened? How does being in a Small Group change how you handle "the squeeze"?
5. The Receipts: How can we, as a group, support the Nicaragua project? How does our collective "Yes" to missions provide "proof" to our own community?
3-Day Devotional
Day 1: Expect the Friction
Read: Acts 5:27–28
Reflect: When we start acting on our faith, pushback is inevitable. Don't let opposition surprise you; let it confirm that you are making an impact.
Prayer: "Lord, thank You that my life matters enough to face resistance. Help me to stay bold today."
Day 2: The Power of "WE"
Read: Acts 5:29
Reflect: Peter didn't stand alone. He spoke for the "WE." Courage is contagious. When you stand firm, you are holding the shield for the person next to you.
Prayer: "Father, thank You for my church family. Help me to be a faithful part of the 'WE' today, encouraging those around me."
Day 3: Being a Witness
Read: Acts 5:30–32
Reflect: We are the "receipts" of the Gospel. Our actions—like building a kitchen in Nicaragua or serving a neighbor—prove that Jesus is alive.
Prayer: "Jesus, use my life as evidence of Your grace. Let my actions be a witness to Your power and love."
