Resurgence Community - Week 1
Proverbs 18:1, 24
Equipping believers to discover their calling and live it out together.
Colossians 1:27
Ephesians 4:11-12
1. Everyone has a role in God’s mission.
2. Everyone has a gift for the mission.
3. Everyone has a people to serve the mission with.
1) Engagement
2) Community
3) Spirit filled courage
Knowing what we are called to do will always be incomplete if we do not know who we are called to do it with.
When you shut everyone out.
Proverbs 18:1
When you let everyone in.
Proverbs 18:24a
Access matters. Not everyone should have the same voice, influence, or proximity in your life.
Jesus’ life in community
Crowds
- Large, fluid, anonymous
- Curiosity > commitment
- Benefits draw them; difficulty thins them
“People who know of you, but don’t really know you.”
- Anonymous / Event-driven / Temporary
Assembly
- Same room, same time, same week
- You recognize names and faces
- Real worship, but still surface-level connection
"People you see consistently, but mostly at a distance.”
- Consistent / Familiar / Surface
Crowd = random and revolving
Assembly = regular but still shallow
We need the crowds because God often meets people in moments—awakening faith, stirring hunger, and drawing the far-off close.
We need the assembly because gathered worship re-centers us—week after week—on what’s true.
Group
- You’re known, challenged, and supported
- Accountability and encouragement are normal
- Spiritual formation happens here
"People who share real life with you—known, loved, and moving in the same direction."
- Known / Accountable / Growing
Few
Matthew 26:36-37
- They see the sweat, tears, and fear
- They stay present, not just helpful
- They protect you, confront you, and when necessary they carry you.
Proverbs 18:24
"People you keep closest when life is heaviest—who don’t just advise you, they stay with you."
- Intimate / Loyal / Weight-bearing
The question isn’t “Do you have people?”
Do you have the right people?
Spur you toward Christ (Heb. 10:24).
Tell you the truth in love (Prov. 27:6).
Stay with you in suffering and joy (1 Cor. 12:26).
Model the kind of faith you want to imitate (1 Cor. 11:1).
Love Jesus.
Love the Church.
Love you.
In that order.
Small Group Questions
1. Where do you see yourself drifting most right now: shutting everyone out (“me and God”), or letting everyone in (too many voices)?
What’s one example from the last month?
2. Isolation is where sin gets privacy, excuses get traction, and discipleship gets diluted.
What tends to grow in your life when you’re isolated? What tends to grow when you’re well-connected?
3. Which “people circle” are you strongest in right now (crowd, assembly, group, few)? Which one are you weakest in?
What do you think God is inviting you into next?
4. Who currently has the most “access” to you (time, influence, proximity)?
Is that access helping you follow Jesus more closely—or making it easier to drift?
5. The sermon gave a filter for your “few”: Love Jesus. Love the Church. Love you. (In that order.)
Do you have 1–3 people like that? If not, what’s one practical step you can take this week to move toward that?
Daily Devotion:
Day 1 — The danger of going alone
Scripture: Proverbs 18:1
Read: “Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.”
Reflect: Isolation can feel like strength (“I don’t need anybody”), but Proverbs calls it a trap. When you’re alone, nobody asks the hard questions—and over time, your heart stops answering them too. Isolation gives sin privacy, excuses traction, and makes compromise feel normal.
Ask yourself: Where have I been isolating lately—emotionally, spiritually, or relationally? What “sound judgment” have I been resisting (conviction, counsel, correction)?
Prayer: “Jesus, I don’t want to follow You alone. Show me where I’ve been isolating. Give me humility to be known, and courage to step back into community.”
Action step: Text one trusted person: “Can we talk this week? I want to be more honest about where I’m at.”
Day 2 — The danger of too many voices
Scripture: Proverbs 18:24a
Read: “A man of many companions may come to ruin…”
Reflect: The problem isn’t having people—it’s having the wrong people with the wrong level of access. If everybody has influence, you don’t get community—you get noise. Noise makes it hard to hear God, hard to obey quickly, and easy to drift. Even Jesus loved everyone, but didn’t give everyone equal access.
Ask yourself: Who currently has the loudest voice in my life? What voices do I need to turn down so I can obey God more clearly? Where have I confused companions with community?
Prayer: “Father, give me wisdom with my relationships. Help me honor people without handing them influence they shouldn’t have. Quiet the noise so I can hear You clearly.”
Action step: Write down your “access list” (top 5 influences—friends, feeds, shows, group chats). Circle the ones that help you follow Jesus. Put a boundary on one that doesn’t.
Day 3 — Build your “few” for the mission
Scripture: Proverbs 18:24b; Hebrews 10:24
Read: “But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” / “Stir up one another to love and good works.”
Reflect: Crowds and assemblies can be good—but they’re an on-ramp, not a home base. Mission is communal. The key question isn’t “Do you have people?” but “Do you have the right people?” Your “few” should: spur you toward Christ, tell truth in love, stay with you in suffering and joy, and model faith worth imitating. Filter: Love Jesus. Love the Church. Love you.
Ask yourself: Do I have 1–3 people who can carry weight with me? If not, what environment am I in where those relationships can form (group, serving team, etc.)? What kind of “few” am I being to others?
Prayer: “God, give me the right companions for the calling You’ve given me. Help me not only find a few, but become a faithful friend who sticks close.”
Action step: Join a community group or Invite someone to coffee this week and ask: “Could we check in regularly and help each other follow Jesus?”
