Resurgence - Week 1
“Wake Up”
Mission- Long term aim of what we are pursuing
Vision- The next big step to get there.
Our Vision: “Equipping believers to discover their calling and live it out together.”
Scriptural foundation for our Vision.
Col 1:27
Eph 4:11-12
Convictions that Shape our Vision:
1. Everyone has a role in God’s mission.
2. Everyone has a gift for the mission.
3. Everyone has a people to serve the mission with.
Challengers to the Vision
C1 - Ball hogs - unwillingness to raise up and release ministry to the body.
C2 - Too Gooders - unwillingness to serve in the less important/praised positions.
The heart in what we do must be motivated by devotion rather than promotion.
C3 - Fighting against vs. fighting for “one another”
C4 - Fake ID’s - people looking to find their worth in titles and positions
3 Steps to Walking toward this new vision
1. Engagement
2. Community
3. Spirit- Filled Courage
What's my first step?
1. The Call to Wake Up Is Rooted in Urgency - Romans 13:11a
“You know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep…”
2. Delay Is Not Neutral—It Costs the Mission - Romans 13:11b
“For salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.”
Key truth:
- Delay doesn’t pause the mission
- It simply removes us from participation in it
3. Engagement Requires Action, Not Intention - Romans 13:12–13
- Cast off the works of darkness
- Put on the armor of light
- Walk properly as in the daytime
4. Putting on Christ Means Carrying His Mission - Romans 13:14
“Put on the Lord Jesus Christ…”
“Equipping believers to discover their calling and live it out boldly—together, everywhere.”
“The mission of Christ does not advance through spectators— it advances through awakened disciples.”
Small Group Discussion Questions
1. Wake Up vs. Stay Asleep
Romans 13:11 says, “the hour has come for you to wake from sleep.”
- Where do you sense the temptation toward spiritual passivity most in your life right now?
- What does “being awake” look like practically for you this season?
2. Delay and the Mission
The sermon stated: “Delay doesn’t pause the mission—it removes us from participation in it.”
- Where might you be delaying obedience, engagement, or involvement?
- What fears, habits, or assumptions tend to justify that delay?
3. Engagement Before Clarity
The message emphasized that engagement comes before clarity, not after.
- Have you ever waited to serve or step in because you felt “not ready” or unsure?
- What might God be inviting you to step into before you feel confident?
4. Putting on Christ
Romans 13:14 calls us to “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”
- How would your week look different if you intentionally carried Christ’s heart, priorities, and mission into your daily rhythms?
- What’s one environment (work, home, neighborhood, church) where this feels most needed?
5. First Step Forward
If engagement is the first step toward the vision, what is one concrete action you can take this week?
- Serving
- Joining community
- Reaching out
- Saying yes to something you’ve avoided
How can this group help you stay accountable?
Devotional 1 — “Knowing the Time”
Romans 13:11 - Awareness leads to responsibility
Read: “You know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep…”
Reflect: Paul doesn’t confront ignorance—he confronts passivity. Believers often know what God wants, but remain disengaged from where He’s working. Spiritual sleep rarely feels rebellious; it feels comfortable, reasonable, and delayed.
Being awake doesn’t mean being busy—it means being responsive.
Ask Yourself: Where have I become spiritually comfortable instead of spiritually responsive? What has God already made clear that I’ve postponed acting on?
Prayer: “Lord, wake me up to Your presence, Your mission, and my responsibility in this season. Make me responsive, not resistant.”
Practice (Today): Pause once today and ask: “God, what are You doing around me right now?” Respond to one prompting immediately—no delay.
Devotional 2 — “Cast Off and Put On”
Romans 13:12 - Engagement requires action
Read: “Let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.”
Reflect: Paul gives two movements: remove and replace. Engagement is not just stopping unhealthy patterns—it’s actively stepping into kingdom practices. Spiritual growth stalls when we only try to avoid sin instead of embracing mission.
You cannot stay disengaged and still walk in the light.
Ask Yourself: What am I being called to cast off that keeps me disengaged? What does “putting on the armor of light” look like in my daily life?
Prayer: “Jesus, show me what needs to come off and what needs to be put on. Give me courage to act, not just intend.”
Practice (Today): Identify one disengaging habit (avoidance, isolation, fear). Replace it with one active step (reach out, serve, pray with someone, show up).
Devotional 3 — “Put On Christ”
Romans 13:14 - Representation, not role
Read: “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ…”
Reflect: To put on Christ is to represent Him—His humility, His compassion, His mission. Jesus never used His position to disengage; He used it to serve. Titles didn’t define Him—obedience did.
You don’t need a platform to represent Christ. You need willingness.
Ask Yourself: Where is Jesus inviting me to represent Him this week? How can I serve without needing recognition or clarity?
Prayer: “Jesus, help me carry You into every space I enter. Teach me to serve as You served and engage as You engaged.”
Practice (Today): Choose one intentional act of service that no one may notice. Do it as worship, not obligation.
