Watch Your Mouth - Week 1
Tame the Tongue
Proverbs 13:3
Luke 6:45
The tongue is small, but it is spiritually powerful. What you say shapes who you become and impacts everyone around you.
The Power of the Tongue
James 3:3-5
The Problem with the Tongue
The tongue is a "restless evil" that cannot be tamed by human effort alone. It is a spiritual problem, not just a behavioral one. The words we speak are a direct reflection of what is in our hearts.
James 3:6
James 3:8
Psalm 141:3
James 3:9-10
The Solution for the Tongue
The only solution for the problem of the tongue is the power of the Holy Spirit transforming your heart. The words you speak are a direct reflection of what's in your heart, and you can't get good words from a bitter, angry heart.
James 3:11-12
Surrendering to the Holy Spirit is not a one-time event but a daily, moment-by-moment position of the heart. It's giving up control, getting out of the driver's seat, and relying on God to do what you can't.
John 15:5
Stop trying to tame your tongue with your own willpower. Confess your struggle with your words and invite the Holy Spirit to transform your heart from the inside out. It's the only way to consistently speak life-giving words.
Small Group Questions
1.
Read James 3:1-5 again. The sermon compared the tongue to a tiny rudder and a small spark. How have you seen a few careless words—spoken by you or to you—steer a relationship in a negative direction or start a "fire"? What was the result?
2. The sermon said the problem isn't the mouth, it's the heart. In what ways do you see your words revealing what's truly going on inside your heart? For example, what does a complaining spirit reveal, or what does a critical spirit reveal?
3. The sermon ended by saying we can't tame our tongues on our own. What does "surrendering completely" to the Holy Spirit look like in a practical way this week? Think of a specific situation you might face where you'll need to rely on the Holy Spirit's help.
4. Read Psalm 141:3. What would it look like for you to start praying this prayer daily? How might inviting God to "set a guard" over your mouth change the way you interact with others?
Devotional
Day 1: The Power of the Tongue
Read: James 3:1-5
Reflection: The words we speak are incredibly powerful. They are not just sounds or letters; they are spiritual forces that can build up or tear down, encourage or discourage. As James reminds us, our tongue, though small, is like a rudder on a great ship, capable of steering the entire course of our lives. A single careless word can start a fire that burns down a relationship or destroys a reputation, just as a single spark can consume a massive forest. This isn't just a metaphor—it's a spiritual reality. Every word you speak today is a choice that will either steer your life toward grace and joy or toward bitterness and frustration.
Prayer & Application: Take a moment to think about the people you will interact with today. Your spouse, your children, a coworker, or a stranger at the grocery store. Pray that God will make you aware of the power of your words. Ask the Holy Spirit to help you choose words that build up and encourage, rather than tear down.
Day 2: The Problem with the Tongue
Read: James 3:6-10 and Psalm 141:3
Reflection: Yesterday we saw the power of the tongue, and today we face the harsh reality: we can't control it on our own. James calls the tongue a "restless evil" that no human being can tame. We can try to be better, we can make resolutions, but our words will always be a direct reflection of what's in our hearts. We can't sing praises on Sunday and then curse on Monday. This is the central problem: a broken heart can only produce broken words. We can’t fix this with willpower. We need a supernatural solution for this spiritual problem.
Prayer & Application: Read the prayer from Psalm 141:3 again: "Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; keep watch over the door of my lips!" This is an admission that you can't do this alone. Take a moment to confess the areas where you struggle with your words. Pray this prayer and ask God to place a spiritual guard over your mouth, keeping watch over what you say.
Day 3: The Solution for the Tongue
Read: James 3:11-12 and John 15:5
Reflection: The sermon made it clear: the solution for a toxic tongue is not about trying harder, but about surrendering completely. You can't get fresh water from a salty spring. The Holy Spirit is the purifying fire who comes in to change the water itself. He takes our sinful, selfish hearts and makes them new. This isn't a one-time prayer but a daily, moment-by-moment surrender. It's the difference between trying to control your tongue and allowing the Holy Spirit to flow through you. When you abide in Christ, your words become a natural outflow of His character.
Prayer & Application: Take a few minutes to be still and quiet. In your own words, confess your need for God's power. Invite the Holy Spirit to come in and begin the work of transforming your heart. Make a commitment to hand over the "keys to the car" daily, admitting that you're a "terrible driver" and trusting His guidance with your life and your words.
