Day 217 – August 6
Love and Hate
“For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous.”
1 John 3:11-12
When we think about murder, we think about the news and how awful it is to witness life being taken away by violent criminals. We would never think of ourselves as murderers.
But Jesus said if we hate our brother, we commit murder in our hearts. Yet somehow we find ourselves covering our hate and executing murderers. Now, certainly this is not to suggest hate and murder should have the same punishment. But in the kingdom of God, hate is equally devastating and is the reason we find ourselves in the mess we are in today. Think about this: Cain and Abel were the first brothers. God intended for us to be relational people, loving each other in brotherly affection. Satan knew that! So the picture we have from the first children on earth was for one to become jealous of the other and literally take his life as a result of comparison and hatred. That sounds an awful lot like our society today. There has always been a mandate for love and there has always been a response of hate in this world. Jesus said in John 8 that the people were speaking lies because their father was the devil (8:44). Hate is operating in right relation with a spiritual father, the Devil, as Cain did. God’s way is to for us to operate as Jesus did, showing our good Father through forgiveness, kindness, and grace. If we are to show the world the way, we must be led by our heavenly father. His way is always love! May we strive to be the ones who lead in love and show the world Jesus is the way.
We’re more than conquerors in Christ.
