Day 214 – August 3
Attitude > activity
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.”
1 John 2:15-16
The desires of our hearts are summarized in 1 John 2: flesh, eyes, and pride. The problems we all fall into are not a matter of activity but attitude. It is humanly possible to stay away from things for a while, but if our hearts remain hardened and our attitudes never change, we will eventually return to the things we despise.
Flesh: Not our skin, but our fallen nature. These things are what our nature pulls us to do. Sex, drugs, addictions…
Eyes: This is our appetite! Anything that we see and desire. Often referring to possessions or money.
Pride: The core belief I can do it myself! The word implies a selfish desire to show others in order to impress and gain notoriety.
Wrapped up in these three are every single sin we will ever commit. They are the result of us becoming callous towards our love relationship with Jesus. If we are not careful, doing “good things for God” will fall in these three categories if they don’t come from a loving heart and the desire to make His name known to the world. Check your heart today, friend. It’s not what you do but why you do it that matters! His love is the reason we do what we do.
We’re more than conquerors in Christ.
