Daily Devotion – August 10

Day 221 – August 10

What’s In a Name?

“And this is his commandment, that we believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us.”
1 John 3:23

The two most powerful weapons we have against our enemy, the devil, are the Word and the Name of Jesus. The way we can remain in His word and live under the name of Jesus is to remain (abide) in Him. Jesus is the word (John 1) and at His name every knee bows on heaven, on earth, and under the earth and proclaims Him as Lord (Philippians 2). John 15 gives us the picture of what it looks like to abide. It compares us to branches and says Jesus is our vine. If we remain in Him we can do anything, but apart from Him we can do nothing! This makes loving each other so painfully simple but impossible to do. Honestly, it’s more than difficult; it’s impossible to love one another if we are not daily filled with the Spirit of God and renewed by the love of God. We must remain in His word and under His Lordship. When we try to love on our own, we love from selfishness, hoping to get something in return. That eventually gets old and the thin line between love and hate grows dim. Apathy begins to fill our lives. For us to live the fullest life God has promised for us, we must remain in Him. When we do, love will be who we are instead of what we try to do. Don’t focus on trying to love. Focus on the one who loved you first – Jesus. He will lead you to love as a result of His love in you.

We’re more than conquerors in Christ.
